Classix 253 Cafe @ Ipoh

$

0

Talking about low profile, Classix 253 Cafe located opposite the stadium in Ipoh has no sign board at all on its facade.  The blue tents filled with people pretty much blocks everything else there is to it, but the more intriguing so I paid it a visit.

DSC_6497

The interior is surprisingly kampung-inspired with old cupboards, cups, lamps and tiffin carriers.

DSC_6499
DSC_6494

The cafe is spiced up with a massive chalk board free for patrons to leave their comments.

DSC_6495

The food served here is Western, including burgers, grills and pasta.  The cafe offers an astonishing promotion dinner set of chicken chop + coleslaw + ice lemon tea and sets alike at between RM 5.50 – RM 6.50, during the time from 5 – 7 pm for the first 50 pax.  Now I know why this place is packed with people when I’ve driven past this place at around 5 pm, which is seriously way too early for dinner.

I took the Mixed Burger Grill 253 (RM 13.90), and came a giant burger with a thick slab of beef patty, a slice of chicken, two sausages, a slice of cheese and a bunch of chili-sauce-drizzled French fries.  That’s too much for me to handle I could only finish the meats without all the carbohydrates.  The beef patty is moderately juicy and it has an interesting gelatinous bits of tendons (my guess).  The tendons created a contrast in texture but it was too tough I could hear it crack in my mouth.  The food is most likely prepared in advance because as it arrived cold – but I shouldn’t complain too much considering the portion and the value.

DSC_6464 DSC_6465

The Honey Punch 253 (RM 4) is another sizeable jug with pineapple, orange juice and sour plum.

DSC_6485

If you are looking for the cafe, it’s the building with the blue tents not too far away from the Petronas Gas Station in Fair Park.  Things are pretty value for money here ranging from RM 4 to RM 15 , while set dinners including soup, dessert and main course are in the range of  RM 10 – RM 15.

Memoirs Cafe is filled with cartoon characters; not Anna and Elsa from Frozen, or the minions from Despicable Me, but old-schooled characters like Popeye, Ninja Turtles, the Thunder Cats and Doraemon. While typical pasta and sandwiches are served here, the dessert portfolio is more interesting with chocolate lollipop, ice cream bun and Haggen Dazs ice cream.

Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 6 Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 5

The rear of of the cafe is a cozy corner that looks like Doraemon and Nobita’s neighborhood, with the pink door seriously resembling the Door to Anywhere.  It’s tempting to check out what’s behind the door, even though that you already know it leads you to the toilette.

Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 10

The smoked salmon croissant sandwich comes with mushroom soup on a cute yellow plate (RM 15.90).  The croissant is jumbo-sized with a hint of buttery flavor; while there’s a decent amount of smoked salmon. Overall it’s average and has no faults.

Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh3 Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh4

The Acai Berry with Pomegranate (RM 10.90) is of single origin and the fancy tea really is black tea with a bit of tannin and some fruity essence.

Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 1 Memoirs Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh2

One of the desserts that stood out was the chocolate lollipop (RM 2.50).  It’s delectably rich yet not overly sweet and so joyful with the colorful sprinkles.  The chilled and truffle-like little ball has got me hooked ! Big enough to satisfy my craving for a little bit of something sweet, yet not too big on the calorie chart. I think I am going to pop in every now and then to grab one :)

Green Hill Sandwiches & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh

Green Hill Cafe serves a range of paninis, pastas and smoothies while bearing a healthy note in mind.  It also serves one of the most value breakfast sets in town.

DSC_4849

The panini sandwich is made of fresh tomatoes, mushrooms, peppers and onions, with a hint of dried herbs.  The panini bread is thin so it has an extra crunch when toasted.  The sandwich comes with black coffee in a set at RM 9.90, which is the most “expensive” set in the menu.  You can even get sets at RM 7.90. A la carte black coffee is RM 5.90 so you might as well.

DSC_4853
DSC_4838

The smoked salmon mini quiche with a hint of herbs (RM 4) is uber-delectable where the smoky flavor is infused evenly throughout the quiche.  The crust though is a bit mushy with a texture too similar to the eggy part.

DSC_4867

The visually appealing macarons (RM 7.50 for 2 pieces) have a strong note of almond though the overall texture could have been more refined.  The desserts here are in small portions and most of them are just RM 5 per piece.

DSC_4878

The cafe has two simple dining sections –  the main section with red chairs + white tables and the green section at the porch.

Friends Cafe @ Ipoh

Friend’s Cafe is one of the earliest cafe that started out in Ipoh in 1999.  The name sounds very 90’s as the famous American TV sitcom “Friends” always comes to mind when I pass by this cafe, but that’s pretty much the only thing 90’s about it because it’s actually contemporary with a full range of local and Western food.

DSC_6028

The cafe is embellished with fictional tree paintings and filled with warmth with a soft glow.

DSC_6039 DSC_6044

The signature dish here is the chicken forest – a reimagined chicken chop that’s complex with many elements that complement each other.  The chicken chop is pan-fried with both front and back thoroughly browned, cut into bite-size pieces and placed on top of mashed potato mounds.  To create the forest effect, salad leaves and vegetable stir fry of capsicums+mushrooms ornate atop and complete the final ensemble.

DSC_6067

The taste is complex – there’s the vinaigrette from the salad; there’s the juices from the vegetable stir fry soaked up by the mashed potato; yet all the flavors go so well together as if they were meant to be.

DSC_6062

The medium rare steak is cooked to perfection with the surfaces lightly charred while the inside remains pink and succulent.

DSC_6070

The salmon steak is enjoyable but only the second time round as it had to be sent back to the kitchen to be thoroughly cooked.

DSC_6059

The seafood tom yam has an ample amount of seafood, though it’s light on the acidity and a tad heavy on the galangal.

DSC_6053

As for dessert, there are the usual cakes, the ever popular macarons, and you can get Gelatomio ice cream here too, but the desserts will have to be a separate round because the main courses here are pretty sizeable.

STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh

While the concept of “the older the better, the shabbier the better” has inspired many cafes in the old town of Ipoh and created a wave among Ipohans, STG Boutique Cafe has done just the opposite, refurbishing an old colonial building to its majestic former glory while infusing a contemporary charm.  The results? Just as stunning.

DSC_6460

There are two entrances to the building, one of which will welcome you to the lobby with a bouquet of gorgeous flowers against a floor of whimsical tiles.

DSC_6446

The other will take you directly to the dining area composed of a cool palette in shades of blue and grey.

DSC_6450 DSC_6453

For starters, we had wild mushroom soup where the texture of itsy-bitsy mushroom bits are tantalizing.  The soup is RM 13 a la carte, but if you are dining at the cafe from Monday – Friday 12 pm – 2 pm, there’s a lunch promotion that if you just add RM 2 on top of your main course, the soup is yours with an ice/hot lemon tea.

DSC_6340

The “Meat” section on the menu is stated with “from Australia only”, an assurance to the quality of meat you will be receiving.  I went with the Paprika Lamb Rack (RM 68) and no regrets.  The lamb is grilled to medium well, leaving the center of the lamb with a dash of pink.  Dab it with the medium-bodied, savory Rosemary sauce and the succulent meat is at its supremacy.  The lamb can be cooked to your specification if you would like it to be more rare.

DSC_6379   DSC_6390

The majority of food on the menu is Western with chef-recommended dishes such as Tea Smoked Chicken Whole Leg, French Duck Confit, Tenderloin Steak and Lamb Sandwich (in the range of RM 20 – RM 68).  There’s also a selection of local delights, in which we picked the Nasi Lemak Ala Kampung (RM 25).  You’ll never go wrong with this Malaysian national dish.

STG Boutique Cafe’s version includes curried crispy chicken, crunchy anchovies, onion sambal with a hint of sweetness, and the usuals of of egg and peanuts.

DSC_6355

The cafe serves an extensive range of Sabah teas from the highlands of Borneo.  The teas are pesticide free and brewed with Spritzer mineral water.

Our  teh tarik (RM 8)  arrived with an unfamiliar color that’s much lighter than the ones that we are used too, but the flavor is big and infused with an uncommon ingredient of pandan.  Other ingredients you may choose to add to your teh tarik include cinnamon, lemongrass, wild mint and ginger.

DSC_6412

The Angel’s Kiss (RM 18) is refreshing with the scent of papayas, pineapple, strawberry and rose and well balanced with Sabah tea where all the elements stood out enough for you to have a taste of everything without being overwhelmed by a particular flavor.  You will mostly likely to ask the waiter to “add water” for a second round of tea because the tea is so good, but only to find out that there are no tea leaves or tea bags in the pot, the reason being that the tea is brewed to its optimal condition before serving and any variables is taken out of the equation so you won’t be drinking tea that’s underbrewed, or overbrewed, but perfectly brewed.

DSC_6351

Cute tea hampers are available too !

DSC_6456

The chocolate Lava Cake (RM 13) takes a prep time of 15 minutes, but every minute of it is worth the wait.  The sight of chocolate lava oozing out of the warm cake is simply irresistible, not to mention that you get to pair with chocolate-drizzled vanilla ice cream.

DSC_6396 DSC_6399

The alcohol-laced tiramisu (RM 14) could possibly be one of the best in town with the ladyfingers at the bottom soaking up the Kahlua, followed by mascarpone and a luscious layer of cocoa powder.  There’s a 50 % cake promotion too for Monday – Friday 3 pm to 6 pm with every order of tea or coffee.

DSC_6404

The upstairs section of the cafe caters to private events from 8 to 80 pax.

DSC_6443

The bouquet at the entrance now viewed from above is still as beautiful !

DSC_6440

This is one of the three private rooms for 8 – 12 pax.

DSC_6420

For bigger events, the seemingly infinite green room with a wall of mirrors and the exquisite red room are available.

If you are looking for quilts in Ipoh, the one piece of item that can instantly add a whimsical vibe to your room, head over to Queena Quilt Shop with three branches in Ipoh, one in Mydin Meru (Lot F12, First Floor), Mydin Gopeng (Lot S 100, Ground Floor) and Ipoh Parade (Lot B10, 3rd Floor, Next Hip Hop Arena).  In our stores, we provide an extensive range of imported quilt items such as bedding sets(king/queen), baby blankets, carpets, floor mats, cushions, sofa covers and car-seat covers.

SJ029

Quilts are inherently lovable because they are warm, vibrant and fun.  The floral ones in our store are the popular ones because those are particularly romantic exuding an English country charm.  This one is totally my style too because my room looks just like this !

floral 1  YZ9177

While others could be stylish, futuristic or simply a representative of who you are.

quilt 1quilt3

Most of our quilts are premium and 100% cotton.  We do provide a 30 % discount or the purchase price, which is really an excellent value.  If you are from KL especially, passing by Ipoh and you love quilts, you should really drop by because quilts in KL of the same quality are much pricier because of a higher cost of living such as higher rental and higher expenses incurred.

We are also constantly sourcing for different kind of items to suit our customers.  For example we are doing a buy one (at RM 89.90) free one promotion with the solid colors quill set below, which means that the average value is an amazing smashing value of RM 44.95 per piece.   Do take note that this quilt set is Not 100% cotton.  Promotion is on while stock last.

34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh,

81 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh).
34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh索引。

Happy Cafe Hunting and Happy Shopping :)

Cafe

1.  Ami Domicile

Ami Domicile Cafe @ Ipoh 3Ami Domicile Cafe @ Ipoh 6

5.  Café De Flore

Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh 1 Cafe De Flore @ Ipoh 10

17.  Foods Project Café

Foods Project Cafe @ Sunway, Ipoh 3 Foods Project Cafe @ Sunway, Ipoh 6

18.  Green Hill Café

Green Hill Sandwich & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh 3 Green Hill Sandwich & Smoothies Bistro @ Ipoh 6

19.  Gomok

Gomok @ Ipoh 9 Gomok @ Ipoh 3

20.  Hobo @ Ganlee & Co

Hobo @ Ganlee & Co, Ipoh 17    Hobo @ Ganlee & Co, Ipoh 5

21.  Ketps Café

Ketps Cafe Ipoh 3 Ketps Cafe Ipoh 1

22. LC n LY Café

LC N LY Cafe Ipoh 2 LC N LY Cafe Ipoh 9

23. Memoirs Café

Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 9  Memoirs Cafe @ Ipoh 5

24. Milk House Café

Milk House Cafe @ Ipoh 8 Milk House Cafe @ Ipoh 6

25.  Morsel Eatery

Morsel Eatery @ Ipoh 8 Morsel Eatery @ Ipoh 5

26. Mustard Sandwich House Café

Mustard Sandwich House Ipoh 13 Mustard Sandwich House Ipoh 2

PT Grande @ Ipoh 6 PT Grande @ Ipoh 1

34. STG Boutique Café @ Old Town

STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh 6 STG Boutique Cafe @ Ipoh 14

36.  The Sandwich – Calorie Reckoner

The sandwich - calorie reckoner @ Ipoh 4 The sandwich - calorie reckoner @ Ipoh 5

Valentino Bridal Cafe @ Ipoh 2

Cafe

1.  Annie Music & Dining Café

Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 3 Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 7

2.  Beacon Point

Beacon Point @ Ipoh 4Beacon Point @ Ipoh 2

Browns Cafe Ipoh 2 Browns Cafe Ipoh 9

6.  Purple Moon Valley

Purple Moon Valley @ Ipoh 3Purple Moon Valley @ Ipoh 11

Take a Break VIP Lounge

81 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh

$
0
0

It’s a new year, new beginning and more new cafes to visit in Ipoh.  Last year, when I wrote 34 Cafes to Visit in Ipoh, I thought that sounded like a big number for small town Ipoh and that number might reach a plateau soon.  I was so wrong.  In 2014 itself, at least 40 new cafes opened.  You still get the boutique cafes and the crossover cafes.  This time, there are also cafes that are not as boutique, but food is good and reasonably priced.  You get a few cafes with unique food creations, but the cafe menu in general is still mostly predictable – the usual pasta, sandwiches and burgers.  You are not going to get anything like “Provencal Four Seasons Salad” or “Croissant with Roquefort and Gorgonzala”, but just try asking for the signature dish and you might be pleasantly surprised.

The list is in three sections.
Section 1 : The latest 39 cafes that opened in 2014 and I’ve managed to catch a few that opened in 2015.
Section 2: There are 8 cafes in this section, featuring cafes that opened in 2013 or earlier, some I missed out last year and some were recommended by readers.
Section 3 : The original 34 Cafes are indexed here for easy reference.
So that makes 81 of them and I decided to do a Chinese version too this year –> 怡保81间特色咖啡屋/Cafe 攻略秘籍。For more information for each of the cafe, click on the individual links provided below.

1.  Ami Domicile

Ami Domicile has opted for the minimalist look and all the focus will be on the food. The white wine cream linguine is splendid with the scent of lightly charred bacon saying hello before anything else.   The dish is well balanced with ample amounts of mushroom, ham and a pleasurable herb-based white cream with a drizzle of olive oil.  I even like the utensils there, heavyweight yet elegant, which instantly ups the dining experience.   Expect Rm 20 – RM30 per person for one food and one drink.

brings us back to the olden days.  Marbled table tops, giant mirrors and old fashioned windows reminisce the typical kopitiam, but at the same time, the cafe is demurely fashionable with Tiffany blue chairs and pink window frames.   The signature wantan noodles are simple, yet with the variety and the abundance of toppings used, the noodles are instantly transformed into a feast.   The white coffee – especially the “kosong” ones have a powerful charred scent with a subtle herbal flavour.  Expect RM 10 – RM 15 per person for one food and one drink.

There are no big sign boards on this low profile halal café.  The only things that indicate it’s a food joint are the blue tents outside and amazingly it has unconventional peak hours from 5 pm to 7 pm because of jaw-droppingly-priced set meals from RM 5.50 to RM 6.50 (limited to 50 pax).  The café has an antique vibe to it with all things old while the large chalkboard is free for all to write a comment on.  Food is prepared beforehand so it doesn’t come sizzling hot, but considering the price and the portion, that’s acceptable.  Expect RM 10 – RM 15 per person for one food and one drink.

Coffeeright Place is a quaint little cafe that’s spicing up Jalan Kampar with the skylines of New York – presented in black and white while highlighting some of the buildings in brilliant colors making them lively and lego-like.    The black pepper baked rice is heavenly where a lavish topping of melted cheese forms a luscious golden blanket, covering an extremely peppery piece of pork and caramelized onions on a bed of fried rice .  Price-wise, it’s quite similar to boutique cafes in Ipoh in general, meaning it’s quite pricey – but, the portion provided is substantial for a complete meal without ordering a dessert.  Expect RM 15 – RM 30 per person for one food and one drink.

is quite a low profile cafe located in Station 18.  It has a plain facade with a simple blue signboard but once you enter  the cafe, it’s eclectic with nostalgia, DIY and personal touches. The cooking style is rather homey, evident with the minimal use of oil and salt; and food is cooked fresh as per order.  The café has a few interesting items like pork lasagna and bloody duck (?!) but they were sold out on the day of my visit.  I did get to try the fish with enticing crisscrossed grill-marks that could do with a drizzle of lemon.

De Dine may seem like your usual café in Ipoh, but it’s signature dish the De Dine Pasta is one of the best pastas I’ve tried in Ipoh.  The prawns are lightly chargrilled to perfection and tossed with spaghetti in a heavenly prawn bisque. That charred flavor has also  infused into the spaghetti and with onions as aromatics, an intoxicating flavor is born.   Other dishes  here are well executed too.  An addictive  one is the mashed potato, so smooth and buttery my brains tell  me to not eat  too  much of carbohydrates, but my hands and mouth just ignored the advice.  Expect RM 15 – 25 per person for one drink and one food.

The little round chubby guy with a tie is Gomok’s mascot – perhaps hinting that the food is so good we will become “gemuk” (fat) after eating at Gomok.  The food here consists of Malay and Western cuisine in substantial portions with some  carnivorous selections.  My basket of protein-heavy assorted meats is a sumptuous feast and did I mention some of the meats have cheese embedded within too? Hobo @ Ganlee & Co definitely belongs to the category of cafes that will instantly start an instagram craze the moment you enter – an origami inspired 2d dinosaur on the wall and a Pinocchiao in hiding are a few things for example.   Old cookie tins, salvaged doors and even a dead tree (an artistic one) have been given a new life here.  Waffles, pancakes, French toasts and of course coffee dominate the café.  I enjoyed the exhilarating cold brew, the mint hot chocolate, while the waffle still has room for improvement.   Expect RM 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

While typical pasta and sandwiches are served here, the dessert portfolio is more interesting with chocolate lollipop, ice cream bun and Haggen Dazs ice cream.  The chocolate lollipop is my favorite, delectably rich yet not overly sweet and so joyful with the colorful sprinkles. The coffees and pastries are just so-so, but then again, one drink and one food item only cost about RM 10 or less so I guess that makes it tolerable.  It’s a good place for cigar and pipe enthusiasts but please do remember smoking is not good for health so do visit the cafe at your own discretion.

The teas here are uncomplicated, mostly having just one component or a blend of two.  I’ve only tried the “Goat Things” here, which is lamb shoulder and it is satisfactory with no faults.  The zaru soba which is a fusion of Japanese and Western doesn’t look too bad maybe I’ll try that one next time.

39.  Valentino Bridal Café

Valentino Bridal Cafe @ Ipoh 10

Valentino Bridal Cafe @ Ipoh 2
The unique levitation pre-wedding photography is not the only thing that’s available at Valentino Bridal House.  The glamourous bridal house in seductive red and opulent black also serves exquisite cuisine with contemporary plating.  The two signature drinks “zero-gravity drink” and “fish bowl” would generate some good fun.  If you happen to be doing a bridal shoot there, check out the café afterwards and not before or you might not be able to “levitate”!  Expect Rm 30 – RM 50 per person for one food and one drink.

Section 2 – Cafes from 2013 & Before

1.  Annie Music & Dining Café

Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 3 Annie Dining & Music Cafe Ipoh 7
The café is almost an hipster café with all the common elements– DIY concept, murals and bicycles though the elements could have been more refined.  Having said that, the food is surprisingly good, both taste and presentation.  Try the mini tortillas that are presented conically, wrapping a spoonful of herbal chicken bolognese with a drizzle of mayonnaise topped with thinly-sliced raw onion.  The café serves alcohol as well and probably turns into a bar at night and hence it has a bit of smoky scent – just in case you are not a big fan of smoke.
Expect Rm 10 – RM 20 per person for one food and one drink.

2.  Beacon Point

Beacon Point @ Ipoh 4Beacon Point @ Ipoh 2
Beacon Point
has been operating in Ipoh for almost 20 years.  It doesn’t look that old except that the vintage broadway posters and movie posters may have revealed its true age.  Signature dishes here include lemak laksa, chicken pie and roast beef.  Going to Beacon Point for dinner is more than eating good food, it’s also about a taste of familiarity, perhaps even a flavor of childhood as you might have eaten at this place since you were young.  .  Expect Rm 15 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

3.  Browns Café

Browns Cafe Ipoh 2 Browns Cafe Ipoh 9
Browns Cafe is located in the clubbing strip of Ipoh Garden East and totally jives with the glittering night scene, while also maintaining a whimsical charm. Browns Cafe’s food is detail oriented even for simple items, for example the mini burgers. Each half of the little buns are buttered, grilled, and each burger has shreds of carrots, cabbages and lettuce, topped with mayonnaise and barbecue sauce.  The patty isn’t a gourmet one but at only RM 10.50, I could not ask for more after such a meticulous ensemble.  Expect Rm 15 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

4.  Friends Café

Friends Cafe @ Ipoh 5Friends Cafe @ Ipoh 11
Friends Café always makes me think of the American TV Sitcom (I’ll be there for youuu ♫♪), and indeed the café was established in that era in 1999.  It’s a sizeable café serving a full range of local and Western food.  The signature dish here is the chicken forest which is a must try as the classic chicken chop is reimagined  with many elements that complement each other. Expect Rm 15 – RM 60 per person for one food and one drink.

5.  Nadia Sugar & Spice Café

Nadia Sugar & Spice Ipoh 12 Nadia Sugar & Spice Ipoh 1
Nadia Sugar & Spice Café is a chic, halal café that oozes a subtle note of English elegance with a bright interior space, floral motifs, and neatly laid out tables.  Most of the halal cafes in Ipoh tend to have some funk about them, while Nadia Sugar & Spice is a feminine one amongst them.  I like the homely chicken rendang , where the rice had an energetic scent of lemak (coconut) accompanied with a fiery chicken rendang. Cuisine served includes both Malay and Western. Expect Rm 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

6.  Purple Moon Valley

Purple Moon Valley @ Ipoh 3 Purple Moon Valley @ Ipoh 11
The lofty cake house is a popular one with its fluffy pastry, yummy cakes and creative fondant cakes made to order.  The baby mouse in diapers is especially cute; the scone is moist and good on its own even without butter, and the happy nuts medley is awesome in sweet caramel sauce. The drinks though didn’t leave any particular impressions though. The Japanese-style mezzanine is quite a gem with its low tables, floral cushions and lots of manga, not to mention that the cake house suddenly seems so big when viewed from this angle.  Expect RM 10 – RM15 per person for one food and one drink.

7.  Take a Break VIP Lounge

Take a Break VIP Ipoh 13 Take a Break VIP Ipoh 4
Assumption is the mother of all scr*w ups – as in the case of this café because I’ve always assumed it’s a (dodgy?) bar until I visited it.  It’s very worldly actually, decorated with posters of iconic places like New York, Paris, San Francisco and more.  The signature dish is white laksa, a gentler version of the red Penang laksa, but still extremely flavorful in its own right with the use of onions, shredded cucumber, mint leaves and secret ingredients.  Expect Rm 15 – RM 25 per person for one food and one drink.

Tammy’s Kitchen could possibly be Ipoh’s best kept secret.  Located amidst the residential area in Ipoh Garden East catering to residents nearby, Tammy’s Kitchen preps food with flawless execution with the use of basic, natural and fresh ingredients, turning them into something extraordinary.   A simple salad instantly outshines others of the same kind with the use of an olive oil based vinaigrette with ground herbs, while a piping hot cheesy salmon marinara would make one thankful for the little things. The quiche too is a popular item with returning patrons.  Expect Rm 20 – RM 35 per person for one food and one drink.

Queena Lingerie & Pantyhose @ Ipoh

Queena Lingerie & Pantyhose in Ipoh Parade could possibly be Ipoh’s best kept secret.  Did you know that most of the stocks, pantyhose, leggings and imported directly from Taiwan? The owner came to Malaysia from Taiwan some 20 years ago.  What started as a humble business thrived till today and the portfolio has also been expanded to accessories, clothing, lingerie and quilts (check out Queena Quilt Shop here).

DSC_3452

The shop is located in Lot F34, 1st Floor in Ipoh Parade, on the same floor as Wong Kok Char Chan Teng, but at the back lane.  If you are coming in from the Starbucks entrance, take the escalator to the first floor, there is a tea shop with tea eggs, take the walkway behind the tea shop, and Queena is located on that walkway.

DSC_3447

There are a few 3D arts on the floor for some good fun, and Queena is located near the dolphin 3D art.

DSC_5563DSC_5572

The vast range of fashionable and chic leggings include the Meinas series,

DSC_3408 DSC_3409

Deparee series,

DSC_5626
DSC_3412

the 2012 series, and much more.

DSC_5580

The classic black leggings are always popular whether it’s cropped, stirrups or full cover; they have excellent elasticity and come in various types such as bamboo charcoal or plus-size.

DSC_3419 DSC_3422 DSC_3454

Or, if you are looking for thin, light and airy pantyhose, they come in may configurations (RM 8.90 – RM 15.90).  The pantyhose here pretty much fulfill all your requirements whether you are looking for transparency, durability,

scented (in this case, the scent of apples), XL size (this one is suitable for pregnant ladies too),

Or something for special occasions.

Burger Camp Ipoh 5Bamboo charcoal recently has become a common household item.  You see them as cupboard deodorizers, you see them in bread , and there’s no reason that you wouldn’t see them in socks.  The bamboo charcoal socks are available in a few styles – sporty, 5-toe, low-ankle, designed-for-flats, and towel-based.  The bamboo charcoal socks are not only uber-comfortable, the fibers are also very porous, making them moisture absorbent and a natural deodorizer.

DSC_3432 DSC_3429

Since Chinese New Year is nearing, these socks with auspicious wordings are really awesome ! If you don’t read Chinese, the pink pair says “Win Lottery”, the purple pair says “Forever Guaranteed Peace & Safety”, the black one says “Everybody Fatt Choy” and the last one says “Good Luck”.

The tradition of “da xiao ren”, literally means”hitting little people”, with the “little people” referring to any malicious person that’s backstabbing.  The act is typically done with clogs (or any other shoes) repeatedly pounding on a piece of paper written with that particular person’s name.

Now you get the socks version of this tradition “cai xiao ren”, meaning “step on little people”, with the little people already conveniently drawn at the bottom of the socks.  Now you can happily trod on those little people, everyday as long as you are wearing a pair.   A bit superstitious, but  that’s Chinese culture.

DSC_3435

Here are a few more socks selections – student stocks, fancy socks, baby socks, children socks, basically socks for everyone (RM 3.90 – RM 12.90), possibly the most complete selection in town.

Some of the lingerie at Queena are from Taiwan as well.  This is the ever-popular bamboo charcoal pants.  The boyshort version doubles up as safety pants for mini skirts.  The fabrics are unbelievably stretchable and elastic they will fit anyone from 40 kg to 120 kg.  Check them out in the store and ask for a demonstration.  The same fabrics are also used to tailor the same kind for men.

Other lingerie selections – in classic timeless colors, or in multitude of colors.

Clothing & accessories are available.

and belts.

Z Bakery Cafe @ Ipoh

$

Z Bakery Cafe is located in Ipoh Old Town, producing fine cakes and breads to satiate the burgeoning demand for more cakes and coffee in the neighborhood.  The cafe is spacious and some of the cakes have a Japanese accent to them.

DSC_6714

The fluffy Japanese cheese cake is not decorated much, but the strong contrast with the lightly crusty baked top and the cottony texture with a sprinkle of crumbs is absolutely satisfying.  It’s much lighter than its western counterparts and I can totally eat two pieces of this all by myself.

DSC_6691

The Chantelle is another piece of masterpiece where fruit pieces and white chocolate flakes adorn the top of the cake; while abstract white chocolate panels enclose alternating layers of moist sponge cake and cream.  The cake is a bit heavy on the cream but still worth a try.

DSC_6698 DSC_6705

The coffee here is alright and fairly aromatic.  Long Black RM 5, Vienna Cafe Latte RM 8.

DSC_6694

Here are a few more cakes from the display shelf, presenting a different kind of pastry affair with chocolate tarts, yam rolls, cranberry cheese rolls and sesame peanut roll.

DSC_6725 DSC_6726 DSC_6727

The upstairs section is capacious and lounge-like you probably won’t have to worry about not finding a place to sit.   Some of the cafes in the same area are tiny and can get way too crowded so now you know where to go if you are looking for somewhere spacious.

DSC_6715 DSC_6722 DSC_6723 DSC_6719

It was just pastry that was available during our visit but now they have included more cooked items like chicken chop, etc.  The cakes were scrumptious and at a fair price too.  Paper plates and paper cups were used for now perhaps at this initial stage; hopefully they can upgrade to normal plates for a more environmental friendly option and better presentation.

The Everyday Lifeshop Cafe in Ipoh old town looks fabulous at dusk with brilliance radiating from the shop. The rainbow-splashed cafe is cluttered in an organized way, creating a warm and down-to-earth atmosphere.

DSC_6657

The cafe is indeed very pretty and very boutique with a touch of Parisian vibe.

DSC_6640

DSC_6635

DSC_6619

The coffee here has character with a hint of acidity and a pleasurable dash of bitterness.

DSC_6614

The character is consistent throughout the coffees we drank – Cappucino (RM 10.80), Americano (RM 9.80),

DSC_6600

and Latte (RM 10.80).

DSC_6649

The menu is basic with crossisants, sandwiches, mini pizzas and cakes.  It does look a bit samey and typical but the vegetarian quiche is surprisingly good with a crisp crust and an alluring flavor of mushrooms.

DSC_6645

Well, you may not have an enormous selection of food; there is an enormous selection of quirky things for the shopaholics.  Take your pick, be it polka dot notebooks, bunny dolls, handsome cat cushions and vintage-inspired enamelwares, you might be able to find something you love :)

Portuguese Egg Tarts @ Lord Stow’s Bakery, Macau

$

If there is only one thing I could eat in Macau, it would be the Portugese egg tarts from Lord Stow’s Bakery. The egg tarts are also sometimes referred to as “Andrew’s egg tarts” as Andrew Stow was the original founder.

The puff pastry seems to be made up of countless of fragile layers that are so thin you could still distinguish each individuals flaky layers.  The custard is irresistibly creamy with an intoxicating sweet scent, but not entirely sweet because there is a also a whiff of caramel from the lightly charred custard.  The egg tarts are dainty, yet taking a bite into one generates big sensations that I will never be able to look at egg tarts the same way again.

DSC_1476 DSC_1474

Despite the egg tarts being super famous with a few outlets in Macau and being franchised in a few countries, the original bakery in Coloane is surprisingly small but cozy.  It was a leisure afternoon when we tried the egg tarts, sitting beneath the tree just opposite the bakery.

DSC_1463
DSC_1467

The only other place that could possibly rival Andrew’s egg tarts are Margaret’s, at Margaret Cafe e Nata located not too far away from Senado Square; with an interesting story behind the tarts too.  Andrew Stow and Margaret Wong were once married and when things didn’t work out, Margaret came out with her own version of egg tart. Story has it that relatively Andrew’s pastry portion is better than Margaret’s, while the custard portion of Margaret’s tarts is better than Andrew’s.  I haven’t had the chance to try Margaret’s, but I think I will end up loving those egg tarts too.

Lok Kei Noodles & Porrdige @ Macau

$

0

Established in 1945, Lok Kei (六记粥麵) specializes in noodles & porridge.  To be specific, the noodles are known as “bamboo noodles” (竹升麵) as the dough is kneaded manually by a giant stick of bamboo.  The dough is kneaded with even forces from all directions and finally pressed into a thin sheet.  The laborious procedure requires years of practice and this particular skill is also amongst one of the “36 Cantonese Cooking Methods” (广东36艺).

DSC_1711

The bamboo noodles are exceptional with a light crunch and it’s perfect to go with everything, whether it’s with wanton or braised beef.  The most extraordinary combination is to pair it with shrimp powder (虾籽捞麵, MOP 38). The noodles might look like food-gone-wrong with its unusual earth-colored powder, but the sawdust-like powder is finer than beach sand with an intense shrimp flavor.

DSC_1685

The wantan skin is also pressed with bamboo stick and is superbly thin.  The broth is a tad bland on the flavor as opposed to the noodles with braised beef.  Both noodles are MOP 28.

DSC_1681 DSC_1684

The bouncy fish balls (米通l鲮鱼球 MOP 52) are coated with an unlikely element – bee hoon shreds; creating crusty fishballs with an ultimate texture.

DSC_1691

The crab porridge (水蟹粥 MOP 180) is another famed dish of Macau and a few different restaurants carry this dish.  The one at Lok Kei is famous, but not particularly out of this world for me.

DSC_1704

Considering that the noodles, the porridge and the fishballs are the “must-tries” at Lok Kei, the stir fries are not too shabby either.  Both dishes – the clams with black bean paste (MOP 52) and the beef hor fun (MOP 45) are hot and steamy I could imagine them tumbling in high heat to generate that “wok flavor”.

DSC_1695

DSC_1689

The restaurant is modest with a local vibe.  It’s hidden in a small lane and not really within the range of any major attractions, making it much less touristy.   If you have a chance, you should at least try the shrimp powder noodles, before the traditional craft of bamboo kneading is lost.

Budapest Itinerary – Best of Budapest

$
0
0

I traveled solo for my trip to Budapest.  I was a little afraid, a little uncertain at first but looks like I had nothing to worry about and yeah I made it back in one piece !  There was so much to do in Budapest and the best part is, it’s one of the most affordable countries in Europe.   One night in Wombats Hostel is at 19 Euros per night (4 bedded room); decent local eats are in the range of 3 euros to 5 euros ; while the admission tickets to attractions tend to be on par with western Europe.  Here is my Budapest Itinerary.

Day 1

Budapest Day 1
Visit the magnificent parliament building.  Guided tours (45 minutes) are available at 5200 HUF for non EU citizens.  There are English tours at 9.45 am , 10 am , 12 pm, 1 pm, 2pm and 3 pm.  Refer to this website if you  need more information on planning.  The change of guards ceremony is at 11.30 am, so you might want to plan to be there around that time (and take a picture with the handsome guards).  For a piece of Hungarian history, take a stroll along the Danube Bank in the vicinity.  You’ll find rusty shoes which is a memorial to holocaust victims during World War II.  The Jews were forced to stand at the edge of the river and fell into the river as they were shot to death, leaving their shoes behind.

Budapest Day 1a
Cross the Chain Bridge and plan for at least half a day ,if not a few days on Castle Hill if you are eager to see all the museums there.  Castle Hill, also known as Castle District is dominated by quaint cafes, museums and historical sites such as the Buda Castle, Matthia’sChurch, Fisherman’s Bastion and  Hospital on the Rock.  As night falls, visit the parliament building again at night because it is even more astounding, glowing like a piece jewel floating on the river.

Day 2

Budapest Day 2

Start the day with a morning hike up Gellert Hill, where the liberation statue and citadel is located.   It’s one of the best vantage points to see the sprawling Budapest City and River Danube beneath you.  Head over to the Central Market for some souvenir shopping and treat yourself with great local eats such as goulash, langos and  dobos torte.

Budapest Day 2a
Pamper yourself at the Gellert Thermal Baths (in Gellert Hotel) to experience the mineral pools fit for a king.  Plan for at least 3-4 hours at the bath for some pool-hopping.  Drop by St Stephen’s Basilica which took more than 50 years to build, before heading to Elizabeth Square to have dinner & booze and chill out under the Ferris Wheel before calling it a day.

Day 3

Budapest Day 3
Enjoy breakfast at the opulent Cafe Gerbeaud on Vorosmarty Square.  I particularly like it at breakfast because there was hardly anyone there and I had the whole place to myself. Do a little shopping afterwards if you wish as Vorosmarty Square is also a shopping district. Visit heros Square, or the Millennium Monument, which was completed in 1900 to commemorate the 1000th year of the Hungarian State founded by Stephen I. If you are into arts, there are two art museums flanking the square – the Palace of Arts and the Museum of Fine Arts.

I fell in love with the thermal baths at Budapest, so I tried another one – the Szechenyi Baths situated in Varosliget Park that’s about 10 minutes walk from Heros Square.  This one is much much bigger than Gellert Baths you will need at least half a day if not a full day there.  Lastly, indulge at the palatial New York Cafe – dubbed the most beautiful cafe in the world.

Budapest Day 3a

The above are the places I had visited in Budapest during my 3 days trip, and as usual, there was too much to see and too little time.  Below are a tonne of places I did not get to visit but would love to :

Ola Korean BBQ Garden @ Solaris Mont Kiara

Ola Korean BBQ Garden was recommended to me when I asked my Korean friend which is her favorite Korean restaurant in Solaris Mont Kiara.  It is a consensus among her and her Korean friends at least , that Ola is one of the best in the area.

DSC_6762

The first excitement we encountered were the side dishes – which consist of nine plates of copious amounts of various kinds of kimchi and vegetables; copious enough that we only topped up 3 plates of side dishes when most of the time we tend to top up everything.   The side dishes are also changed periodically to prevent monotony.  The kimchi that was served on that day was atypical, being non-fermented yet equally fiery.

DSC_6764

My Korean friend took charge with the ordering and it’s good  because she ordered kongbigi jiigae (RM 25) and kongguksu (RM 25), which are two things that the restaurant is famous for among the Koreans, duplicating authentic Korean flavors.

DSC_6765

Both dishes are soy bean based and look a bit heavy because of their viscosity, but surprising the soy bean puree is light with an uber-fine texture.  The kongguksu is a cold dish where soba noodles are smothered in the smooth soy bean puree; especially refreshing on a scorching day.

DSC_6767
DSC_6776

The kongbigi jiggae comes piping hot with a bit of minced pork within but this time it’s covered in a reddish yellow soy bean paste because of the addition of finely shredded kimchi.  My friend mentioned that if you were to go to Korea and order these two dishes there, they would taste exactly the same as the ones in Ola Restaurant.

DSC_6768

The rice that comes with kongbigi jiggae has a uncommon red hue with the black rice as part of the ingredient.

DSC_6770

The gypposel, or pork belly pieces are grilled to perfect so they are browned equally on both sides for a crusty surface.  Besides the lettuce leaves that usually accompanies the meats, a second type of leave is provided – the mint leaves.

DSC_6771 DSC_6777

We visited the restaurant on a different occasion, because I wanted to try the duck items on the menu.  We ordered “hunhe & pork ori”, or smoked duck + smoked pork on hot plate (RM 70).  The meats were sizzled on the hot plate laced with a layer of chives, intensifying the smoky flavor while browning the edges of the slices.  Truly a delectable dish.

DSC_7229

We also ordered an impressive halmae bossam (napa wrap with pork, RM 83).  The pork is braised till supple while the fats melt in your mouth, maintaining a sufficient level of greasiness yet not too sinful it because the fat layers are so thin.  It’s another scrumptious dish best enjoyed with an array of vegetables provided.

DSC_7234 DSC_7233 DSC_7238

The restaurant has private rooms available for bigger parties.

DSC_6759

It is located on the 1st floor of  Soho building, just above Salt Lick; you’ll be able to see it if you are standing at the BBQ K / DHS Mart Shoplot.

Titi Eco Farm @ Negeri Sembilan

I was invited to Titi Eco Farm for a 2 days 1 night stay to experience an organic way of life.  The farm is self sustainable, rearing its own chickens, fish, and planting various types of vegetables on a crop rotation basis so the soil nutrients can be replenished.

DSC_7223

The farm is about 1.5 hours – 2 hours drive from KL and there’s a reason for that – because certified organic farms need to be at least 50 miles away from  major cities to prevent pesticide pollution from the neighboring soils.  Plan to arrive before dark because the last section of the road into the farm is winding and not very well lit.

DSC_7192
DSC_7191

This is the semi D chalet we stayed in.

DSC_7037
Titi Eco Farm 65

The room is basic with a fan.  Fret not, it gets cool enough at night to sleep with windows that open to a netted balcony.  I can’t recall the last time I slept this close to nature.  I slept to the sounds of insects buzzing and woke up to the sounds of birds chirping.  But that’s my side of the story.  My husband was glad he brought his ear plugs.

DSC_7024  DSC_7029 DSC_7032

The bathroom is simple with heater.  Do remember to bring your own towels.  Hair dryer is provided upon request.

DSC_7027

Dinner was fantastic with harvest of the day.  It’s the kind of healthy food that your mum would cook at home.  With the use of basic seasoning, that extra sweetness of organic food storms over your palate.

DSC_7062

The steamed chicken with papaya is unbelievably sweet, topped with a sprinkle of goji berries.

DSC_7060

The reinvented papaya salad is refreshing with a punch.  Wrapped in leaves, the shredded green papaya is topped by passion fruit juice and red papaya pickle, conveniently sized to grab by the hand.  The red papaya is pickled with lemon, which I got addicted to and bought a  bottle home from the in-house mini market.

DSC_7064

The steamed fish is fresh from the pond.

DSC_7067

Simple vegetable stir-fry.

DSC_7068

The aloe vera dessert is really gorgeous with its pink hue.  It’s strange because most of the time aloe vera appears green in this form.   I asked if some sort of roselle juice or lotus powder was added to give it the color, the answer was no and pink is the natural color.

DSC_7073

It was free and easy after dinner.  You could do a bit of star gazing or play board games at the massive common area.  You might want to bring along your own drinks or snacks for some chit chat as the nearest convenience store is about 15 – 20 minutes drive away.

DSC_7082
DSC_7078 DSC_7077  DSC_7087

At the start of day 2, it was yet another stunning and extraordinary meal where we ate flowers for breakfast. It was my first time ever eating flowers !  Both flowers had supple petals with a faint note of floral fragrance.

DSC_7089
DSC_7105

The bread roll is dense with sesame spirals, best when topped with roselle jam and sprouts jam.

DSC_7091 DSC_7106

The sprouts are also available in powder form.

DSC_7103

Sweet potatoes came in two forms, steamed or incorporated into starchy balls almost similar to mochi.

DSC_7099
DSC_7093

The fried rice is a bit plain and oiless, but that’s the whole point.

DSC_7096

And of course, how could we not have coffee in the morning? The coffee is organic and grown on the farm.  Too bad that the production is just sufficient  to serve the patrons staying at the place but not enough for those that wish to buy a packet or two home.

DSC_7112

The farm tour followed.  Nothing beats being able to see where and how your food is produced.  Nothing goes to waste at this farm.  Food scraps are composed off to become fertilizers and re-enter the ecosystem again.  The 40 acre farm has a plethora of crops and it is safe to pluck them off and eat it on the spot.  The range of crops include :

Tea,

DSC_7116

long beans,

DSC_7121 DSC_7122

herbs (this one is similar to stevia leaves and yes we tasted it right there and then),

DSC_7123

papayas,

DSC_7129

pineapples,

DSC_7152

aloe vera (with flowers !)

DSC_7154 DSC_7153

sesame,

DSC_7173

coffee beans and much more.

DSC_7171
DSC_7168

The owner took us around the farm and he is extremely passionate about what he does.  He talks organic, eats organic and lives organic too.

DSC_7165 DSC_7162

All the chickens and fish we ate are all produced on the farm as well.

DSC_7137 DSC_7138

The fish are reared in the ponds using a sophisticated recyclable system, where carnivorous and herbivorous fish are reared in the same pond, and the carnivorous feeds off the baby fish of the herbivorous, minimizing energy used to produce fish food, yet maintaining a healthy population.

DSC_7130

There’s a small petting zoo with rabbits and goats.  The rabbits are super active here running all over the place !

DSC_7141 DSC_7143  DSC_7148

And lastly, we ended the tour with a bit of adventurous activities before walking back while plucking another piece of flower to eat.

DSC_7182 DSC_7183 DSC_7184
DSC_7177
DSC_7185

An interesting fact to note is that the white flower changes its color to pink within a few hours; looking more striking but tasting less yummy with a bit of bitterness.  So don’t eat this flower when you see it’s pink.

DSC_7217

Before we knew it, it was time for lunch again and the farm continued to wow us with its fresh produces.  We’ve been indulging ourselves with a lot of food, but guilt-free.  How much calories can vegetables and flowers give you ?

DSC_7200
DSC_7209

Most of the time, organic food is associated with an extra hint of sweetness, sometimes it can be distinguished, sometimes not.  One of the fresh produces here is clearly very much different is the white carrot.  White carrot has a note of spiciness when you eat it raw; that spiciness goes away when it’s cooked.  I was amazed with the carrot soup we had, with its distinctive spiciness still remaining.

DSC_7206

Another unexpected surprise was the giant custard-apple; it was big enough to feed the whole table.  After eating this fruit, you would really understand why there is “custard” in its name because it was the creamiest ever.

DSC_7201
DSC_7213

Organic Products are available for purchase at the mini market in the farm, or you may also look for the selected dealers in your state that carries these products in the farm’s website.

Hammam Bistro @ Publika

Hammam Bistro in Publika offers exotic Moroccan and French cuisine that’s fit for a king.  The bistro is very well hidden on level G4, located right next to Hammam Spa (or above Switch Cafe).  Once you have located the bistro, it’s anything but discreet with its narrow, cavernous interior adorned with brilliant colors.
DSC_6960

The bistro is very artistically cluttered with lots of elements such as vibrant tiles, white, elegant window railings and color combinations that speak personality.

DSC_6953 DSC_6970  DSC_6966   DSC_6965

Dinning under the  Moroccan lamps was simply fabulous, where the dazzling lamps sway lightly, reflecting curious shapes of shadows on the floral-patterned ceiling.

DSC_6976

The menu is equally fun; as in how it’s designed and what’s on the menu.  The bistro is also a tea room with a variety of teas such as the classic Moroccan mint tea, , which we’ll have to try next time as we brought our own wine (no corkage).

DSC_6975

For starters, warm bread was served with finely chopped olives and chili.

DSC_6978

Salad de Coeur de Palmier (RM 25) is piquant with sweet tangerines, avocado cubes, red cabbage shreds and a tad of saltiness from balsamic caviar enhances the dish.  The salad dressing is zesty with a flavor that reminds me of “chenpi” (dried orange peel).

DSC_6989

Crab bisque (RM 20) is delectable with a drizzle of cream, and shreds of crab meat that adds texture; though I would have loved it to death had it been heavier in flavor.

DSC_6983 DSC_6991

Characteristic items on the menu would be the dishes cooked in North African traditional earthenware, the tagine.  Kefta Shakshuka (RM 45) sounds awfully charismatic and it is indeed, where moist lamb meatballs are  cooked in tangy tomatoes topped with runny eggs, offering a delectable treat of Moroccan cuisine.  Chicken and fish tagines are also available.  I am so going to Morocco.

DSC_7012
DSC_7015

The mixed grill (RM 128) is a feast comprised of lamb shank, prawn skewers, fish and chicken, accompanied with a creamy mushroom sauce that I could have drank it as soup.  Portion is enough for two persons.

DSC_6995

The most supreme of them all is definitely the lamb – grilled to medium and it’s utterly tender that the pinkness is enough to make me salivate.

DSC_7010

Hammam also serves set meals that would give you a nice gist of Moroccan cuisine;  three courses @ RM96 and two courses @ RM 70.

Brewyard Coffee @ SS 15 Subang Jaya

Brewyard Coffee @ SS 15 Subang Jaya has a barn-like aura to it with a raw look.  The “Sugar Rush” items on the menu ensure those needing a calorie boost will be satisfied.

DSC_7243

DSC_7246 DSC_7251

I am going to start off with my favorite which was the dessert we had – the “Gone Mars Bar” under the “Sugar Rush” menu (RM 12).  It’s fried Mars bar with a scoop of ice cream, drizzled with chocolate sauce and sprinkled generously with icing sugar.  How sinful.  The Mars bar is wrapped in a thick batter (too thick actually) and deep fried.  As you take a bite into this “Mars bar goreng”, chewy toffee intertwined with oozing warm chocolate promise flavors of elation.  It gets better when you send in a spoonful of vanilla ice cream.  Other items on the “Sugar Ruch” menu sound just as sinful, such as the B.Y. Waffle, “with nutella, oreo ice cream, fruits, peanut brittles & Nutella sauce”; or Salted Pancake with “salted caramel sauce, bacon bits & vanilla ice cream”.  Both sound seriously tempting for a re-visit.

DSC_7276
DSC_7279

The other items we tried were salad (RM 8), french fries (RM 7), turkey tortilla (RM 18) and calamari aglio olio (RM 18).  They were not bad, though not out of this world.

DSC_7258 DSC_7261

The tortilla wrap I suppose made me feel less guilty as this one is much healthier with fresh vegetable shreds and turkey ham, compared to the Gone Mars Bar !

DSC_7254

Calamari aglio olio was al dente but not too striking in terms of flavor.

DSC_7262

The long black coffe (Rm 7) which I forgot to take a photo of was delectably rich and aromatic.

Wood & Steel @ Shah Alam

Wood & Steel has opened a new branch in Shah Alam, incorporating art, furniture and coffee all under one roof; it’s bigger and bolder than its other branches.  With bicycles parked vertically on the walls; curious antiques displayed and eclectic wooden furniture, the artsy vibe undoubtedly creates a warm welcome to anyone that pushes through the door.   A very pretty cafe indeed to set off all the shutterbugs on a frenzy.

DSC_7329
 DSC_7331
The Shah Alam branch is actually the furthest away from me compared to all the other branches in Kota Damansara; or the BAD Cafes by Wood & Steel in Publika and Hartamas, but somehow this is the one that I managed to visit.  Guess it’s meant to be.DSC_7324 DSC_7306It’s very soothing to sit at the cafe with the soft glow and wooden furniture.

DSC_7299 DSC_7293   DSC_7291

The coasters too are woody, looking kinda like chocolate chip cookies actually.

DSC_7296

We only ordered black coffee here (Rm 7) as we just popped in to kill some time before meeting a friend.  The black coffee is so-so, being too light and without aroma.  The food menu might be better as other bloggers have written some average to decent reviews about other branches.  The menu at  Shah Alam consists of  various types of pastas, burgers, and sandwiches.

DSC_7301
While I probably won’t be back for the coffee; I do like the furniture and art pieces that are for sale.  Most of the furniture here are “statement pieces”; adding a piece or two would accentuate your home.
DSC_7288
DSC_7287The 1st floor is the gallery, exhibiting larger furniture pieces.  If it gets too crowded downstairs, there’s also a semi-open balcony area for more room.
