Kuala Sepetang is a fishing village 20 km away from Taiping town.  Naturally, the seafood from the village is the freshest it can possibly get and at a good bargain too.  We ate at Restaurant Sungai Tepi – which has a felicitous Chinese name “海上”, which means “above the sea” and we were literally “above the sea” because the restaurant is on a balcony that looks out to the sea.

Our flower crab is steamed with egg white with a bit of rice wine.  The best part (to me) is the gooey mustard ! Seaside villages like Kuala Sepetang or Sitiawan are the best places to eat flower crabs because these are probably the only places that you can get them fresh.

The mantis prawn with ginger and scallions is my favorite dish.   The mantis prawn is springy and lightly charred on the edges.  Luckily for us, the prawn had some extra bonus with the roes! Now this is not your normal seafood stir fry.  It has the addition of deep-fried and crispy garlic, which makes a world of difference in terms of taste.  The mantis prawn is smothered with the flavors of golden garlic, scallions and ginger, making it so unforgettable !

The steamed shells have lightly crunchy meat and they are tasty whether eaten as is or eaten with the none other but Kampung Koh chilli sauce provided.

The steamed fish is a weird looking fish with a squarish face which we haven’t really seen it anywhere else.  The fish came skinned and topped with the golden garlic which I hail so much about.  I would give a thumbs-up to anything that came with the golden garlic for taste.  Texture wise, the fish was over-steamed making the flesh not as soft a it should be.

The seafood section where you can choose your seafood – kind of like shopping at the wet market.

On the ground floor of the restaurant is where the fishing boats dock and process their daily catch.  Seafood is for sale here too.

Our total bill came up to RM 90+ with the mantis prawn being the most pricey dish at RM38.  If you are in the Ipoh or Penang area, driving to Kuala Sepetang in Taiping for some good seafood is totally worth the drive :)
